YOSHIMITSU YAMADA

Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan (February 17, 1938 – January 15, 2023) was one of the most influential figures in the international spread of Aikido.

  • 1955: accepted as an uchideshi (live-in student) at Hombu Dojo to study with Morihei Ueshiba.
  • 1964: traveled to the U.S. and established the New York Aikikai.
  • He chaired the United States Aikido Federation (USAF) and founded the Sansuikai federation.

For decades he taught throughout the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe and Africa. He always emphasized the importance of basics and a strong foundation, understanding intense practice as a path of physical and spiritual development.

His connection with Mallorca Aikido Club

Mallorca Aikido Club has had a close connection with Yamada Sensei since 1994. Between 2000 and 2013, he taught seminars in Mallorca on a regular basis. After his passing, his legacy continues in the Sansuikai community and in daily practice on the tatami.
